Bike safety!

  • Use a clear hand signal if you want to turn. Slow down or stop.

  • If you are riding in a big group of about 6-8 you should ride 2 across and 2 seconds behind each other.

  • Always give way to emergancy vehicles when their sirens are on or if their lights are flashing. Its a good idea to pull over and stop on the kerb.

  • If you are turning at an intersection, give way to all vehicles not turning.

Snowed In
When we woke up in the morning I got up and it was snowing! I hadn't seen snow for four years, since 2006.

The day before we were looking at weather watch and metservice about the strong polar blasts soon to hit. We watched a few videos on the long days ahead and saw that it was supposed to snow up until Wednesday.

My brother and I had snowball fights and built a "fortress " that we knocked down. We made a BIG snow man that got covered in more snow because it kept stopping and starting again. At one stage we had blue skies overhead then a few minutes later it would look like a blizzard. We had alot of lightening and thunder which shook the house!

It is snowing again now 4.10pm and I hope it keeps going. Wow just had lightening and thunder again.

This photo is of the knocked down fortresses.

We cleared the pathways with our shovels.

How cool Zack. Looks like you have had a neat fun day. And here was I worrying about you being bored! LOL! Mrs R.

WEATHER QUESTIONS
  • What are the four main components that make up weather?
  • What is fog?
  • What makes the sound in thunder?
  • Are rain and snow clouds different?

ANSWERS:
  1. WIND, WATER, HEAT AND LAND
  2. A CLOUD THAT FORMS NEAR THE GROUND
  3. THUNDER IS THE SOUND LIGHTENING MAKES. LIGHTENING IS STATIC ELECTRICITY AND WHEN THE ELECTRICITY HITS THE AIR IT VIBRATES CAUSING SOUND WAVES.
  4. NO. IN WINTER THERE IS USUALLY SNOW IN THE CLOUDS AND WHEN IT'S RAINING IT MEANS THE SNOW HAS MELTED BEFORE IT REACHES THE GROUND.

EROSION
  1. Water is the main force of erosion.
  2. Caves and Canyons are made by erosions.
  3. Erosion can cause fault lines to get deeper.
  4. Bio Erosion is the break down of rock or land by plants oranimals.
QUESTION:
?? What erosion causes the most damage of the earths surface??

Answer: Water in it's hardened form - ice/glacier

WAYS TO BE ENERGY EFFICIENT

  • HRV (Heat Recovery Ventilation system) dries out your house making it easier to heat therefore making it energy efficient and costs you less.
  • Using energy efficient lightbulbs uses about 30% less power than normal lightbulbs & can cut up to 10% of your powerbill.
  • Switching off powered appliances at the wall can save you up to 10% of your powerbill. When you leave them switched on even if you're not using them they are leaking power- this called phantom power.
  • Keep your hot water cylinder no more than 55oC. Every 10oC more uses 10% more power.

My question is: In your bedroom, is there anyway you can save power? reward: $500

Lyttelton, 24th March 1882
Did you know?
  • Captain William Rhodes first visited in 1836. he came back in 1839 and landed a herd of 50 cattle near Akaroa.
  • In November 1847 John Robert Godley and Edward Gibbon Wakefield met to plan the Canterbury Settlement.

  • Who designed the Lyttelton tunnel?
I'm impressed Zack! You've done an excellent job of this task. I really like the way you have written up the facts in your own words. Keep up the good work. Mrs Ross :-)

Did you know facts about solar power

  • Solar panels are made out of crystalline silicon or amorphous silicon.
  • Another solar generating technology uses photovoltaic (pv) to convert sunlight directly into electricity.
  • During the day, batteries store solar energy, then at night they discharge it so you will have power.
  • The pv solar energy plant scheduled for completion this year in Deming, New Mexico, will be 300 megawatts, and 15 times larger than the largest in the world.

Question: How do you build a solar panel and what would you need?Photos_new_014.JPGPhotos_new_015.JPG
